Vandaag is een nieuw hoofdstuk toegevoegd aan de inmiddels jaren durende gezondheidsproblematiek rond Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs. In een e-mail aan medewerkers maakte Jobs bekend dat zijn gezondheidsproblemen ‘meer complex’ waren dan hij tot voor kort vermoede. Gecombineerd met de nog steeds voortdurende geruchten rond zijn gezondheid hebben hem doen besluiten om tot eind juni 2009 met medisch verlof te gaan. Gedurende Steve’s afwezigheid zal COO Tim Cook de dagelijkse gang van zaken waarnemen. Voor belangrijke strategische beslissingen houdt Steve zich echter nog wel beschikbaar.

De bekendmaking van dit nieuws was reden genoeg om de handel in het aandeel Apple tijdelijk stil te leggen. Veel analisten vreesden al langer voor slecht nieuws rond Jobs’ gezondheid. Tech-blog Gizmodo waarschuwde een aantal weken terug voor dit nieuws, nog voor Steve’s eigen initiatief om dergelijke berichten tegen te spreken.

In de vandaag verschenen e-mail spreekt Steve de hoop uit dat de aandacht in de media en de Apple community voor zijn gezondheid zal afnemen. Ook spreekt hij de hoop uit om eind juni zijn werkzaamheden weer op te pakken.

Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought. In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June. I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan. I look forward to seeing all of you this summer. Steve
