Wil je je eerlijk op DVD gekochte films en TV-series ook op je iPhone, iPod of iPad bekijken? Dan zit er niets anders op dan de DVD-encryptie te slopen, de video in te laden en vervolgens te converteren naar een iOS-compatible formaat. Gelukkig is er een gratis Mac applicatie die je al dit werk uit handen neemt: Handbrake.

Na meer dan een jaar is er een nieuwe versie uit van dit DVD-ripprogramma: Handbrake 0.9.5. De update bevat een aantal nieuwe functies, maar heeft voor G4/G5 Macbezitters alleen maar slecht nieuws. Vanaf nu gaat Handbrake Intel only.

Nieuw in Handbrake 0.9.5 is presets voor een aantal nieuwe apparaten, zoals de iPhone 4 die met z’n retina display hogere resoluties kan tonen, de iPad en de nieuwe Apple TV. Daarnaast is er een bredere ondersteuning voor de detectie en conversie/implementatie van ondertiteling.

Ook kan Handbrake nu overweg met de structuur van Blu-rayschijven. Dat klinkt echter interessanter dan het is: de encryptie van commerciële Blu-ray’s kan niet gekraakt worden door het programma. Alleen DRM-vrije schijven kunnen geconverteerd worden.

De update is gratis te downloaden in een 32-bit of 64-bitversie. De volledige lijst met bugfixes en nieuwe functies is hieronder te vinden.
