Het leuke van de de publicatie van Apple’s kwartaalcijfers is dat er in een begeleidende conference call met het journaille altijd wel wat extra snippers informatie opdwarrelen.

Zo liet CEO-ad-interim Tim Cook weten dat Apple niet de minste interesse heeft in het uitbrengen van de iPhone nano waarover in het geruchtencircuit al maandenlang nerveus wordt gelispeld:

“You know us, we’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are. That’s not why we’re here. We’ll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone.” Ook het schuchter ontluikende segment van de Netbook (een kleine, voordelige laptop bedoeld voor relatief eenvoudige taken als websurfen of e-mailen) laat Apple voorlopig aan zich voorbijgaan. Volgens Cook bestaat het huidige aanbod vooral uit de categorie ‘brakke meuk’. Of in zijn eigen woorden:

“We’re watching that space, but right now from our point of view, the products in there are principally based on hardware that’s much less powerful than we think customers want, software technology that is not good, cramped keyboards, small displays. We don’t think people will be pleased with those products.”

Dat laat aan duidelijkheid weinig te wensen over. Ook aardig om te weten is tenslotte dat de verkopen van Apples zelfbenoemde hobbyproject, de Apple TV, met 300% gestegen zijn. Cook kondigt aan dat Apple zal blijven investeren in de digitale woonkamer, maar voegt er wel aan toe:

“… given the economic conditions, given the venture capital outlook and stuff, I continue to believe that it will be a hobby in 2009.”

Ach ja. Als hij er maar aardigheid in heeft, zullen we maar zeggen. Daar zijn het tenslotte hobbies voor.
