RealNetworks, de maker van de RealPlayer software, heeft Apple het hof gemaakt, maar lonkt ondertussen ook naar een ander. Cnet meldt namelijk dat Steve Jobs een voorstel van Real CEO Rob Glaser heeft ontvangen om te gaan samenwerking op het gebied van online muziek. Maar het aanbod wordt vergezeld dat Real zich bij een afwijzing van Apple zal aanbieden aan de concurrent: Microsoft.

Citaat: In his message, which was obtained by The New York Times from a person close to Apple, Glaser asked Jobs to consider licensing Apple’s Fairplay digital rights management system to RealNetworks to permit customers of the RealNetworks music service to play their digital music collections on iPod players. In exchange, RealNetworks would make the iPod its primary device for the RealNetworks store and for the RealPlayer software. Een verzoek van Real dus om Fairplay in licentie te mogen gebruiken om muziek te beveiligen, zodat ook muziek die bij Real is gedownload op de iPod af te spelen is. Glaser probeert zijn boodschap kracht bij te zetten met wat avances richting WMA, het audioformat van Microsoft.

Citaat: “We are seeing very interesting opportunities to switch to WMA,” Glaser wrote. “Instinctively I don’t want to do it because I think it leads to all kinds of complexities in terms of giving Microsoft too much long-term market momentum.” De verwachting is dat Apple niet zomaar zal toehappen, aangezien het op dit moment met afstand de grootste macht in online muziek.
