Apple was de eerste. Zoals gewoonlijk. Nadat Apple de iTunes Music Store lanceerde, volgden vrijwel direct klonen als BuyMusic.com, de Skynet Music Club en niet te vergeten het nieuwe Napster (waarbij ook betaald moet worden om muziek te downloaden). Op C|Net en Telegraaf.nl Digi kunnen we lezen dat nu ook universiteiten en hogescholen gaan proberen om een legale muziekservice voor studenten te organiseren:
