Misschien dat Steve Jobs het al wist (met zijn voorspelling ‘over een jaar zitten we op 3 GHz met de G5’), maar IBM is van plan het PowerPC-productieproces meteen naar 0.06 micron te duwen (vanaf 0.13 micron)!

Citaat: Actually, it looks like the first tests of production of PowerPC 970 processors at 0.06um are very encouraging and that IBM is thinking about skipping a step on the roadmap of it’s PowerPC processors. The fact is that a 0.06um based PowerPC 970 will have a lot of advantages: first of all, it will be noticably cooler than the current PowerPC 970, secondly it will be able to reach even higher clock speeds, and finally, it will be cheaper to produce. Waarschijnlijk zal IBM geen 0.09 micron-processors produceren, om tijd en geld te sparen. Los van de vraag of dit nieuws waar is, zou het heel goed nieuws zijn voor Apple, ze zou dan namelijk de mogelijkheid hebben om binnen relatief korte tijd álle Macs (ook laptops en iMacs) van een G5-processor te voorzien (niet dat Apple dat in korte tijd zal doen, maar het geeft het bedrijf wel wat meer ‘ruimte’).
