Op 1 december is het wereldaidsdag, maar Apple neemt nu alvast een aanloopje. Wie tussen zijn app-updates krijgt, zal opmerken dat een aantal apps rood gekleurd zijn. De komende twee weken is een speciale sectie van de App Store ook helmaal RED.

Van 24 november tot 7 december bieden 25 veelgebruikte apps extra RED-content aan. De opbrengst van de app- en in-app aankopen wordt aan het Wered Aids Fonds gedoneerd. Op wereldaidsdag zal Apple ook deel van iedere aan­koop in de fysieke en online Apple Store aan het Wered Aids Fonds doneren.

Onder andere Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Monument Valley en Farmville doen mee met exclusieve RED in-app content. Zo krijgen Angry Birds magische rode veren, en zijn in Cut the Rope een groot aantal rode items zoals een hoed en ballonnen toegevoegd. Ook andere apps doen mee. Zo zijn de draaitafels in DJay 2 roodgekleurd en is er een speciaal sound pack. Apple’s eigen Garage Band biedt de mogelijkheid om 300 samples met loops, effecten en muziek te kopen.

Apple en (RED) werken al lange tijd samen in de strijd tegen aids. Onder de naam PRODUCT(RED) worden hoesjes voor iPhone en iPod verkocht en de iPod is als speciale (RED) editie verkrijgbaar. De liefdadigheidsorganisatie is opgericht door U2-zanger Bono en organiseert regelmatig acties. Zo bracht een rode Mac Pro, die door Jony Ive en Marc Newson ontworpen werd, tijdens een veiling bijna 1 miljoen dollar op.
